Celeste Rojas Mugica (b.1987, Chile) is a visual artist, photographer and filmmaker. She is currently studying the Master in Film Creation of the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (Basque Country). She investigates the relation between memories, violence and imaginaries about the territory, working with images and archives as materials and media of experimentation around its social uses and its political power, setting her practice in relation to the borders between fiction and document. She has exhibited and published her work in Latin America, Europe and Asia. During her career she has been supported by Ibermedia; FONDART and Fondo Audiovisual (Chile); BECAR Cultura of the Ministry of Culture of Argentina; the National Fund of Arts of Argentina, the Deutsch Art Council (Italy), among others. Her work has been recognized with the National Young Photography Prize (Chile, 2017), the Buenos Aires Young Art Biennial Prize (Argentina, 2017) and the Latin American Creation Prize of the Biennial of Image in Movement (Argentina, 2018), among others. She has recently exhibited her work in exhibitions and festivals such as Ars Electronica (Austria), BIENALSUR (Argentina; Chile), Les Rencontres d’ Arles (Francia), Image & Movement Biennial (Argentina) and the San Sebastian Film Festival (Spain), among others.Represented by Rolf Art Gallery.
Celeste Rojas Mugica se aproxima sobre las consecuencias de ciertos eventos históricos de Sudamérica, el imaginario simbólico-político del paisaje y el uso social de las imágenes. Su interés por la imagen técnica surge a temprana edad en un cuarto oscuro construido en su casa donde aprendió a revelar fotografías. Su historia personal y familiar se funden con la historia política reciente del Cono Sur -la lucha contra las dictaduras argentina y chilena, los diversos desplazamientos forzados que sus padres sufrieron durante los años setenta y ochenta- conformando el contenido y la materialidad de las imágenes que construyen su obra. Fueron esos eventos los que algún modo condicionaron su práctica fotográfica y la elección del archivo como soporte de experimentación y espacio de reflexión, desarrollando ejercicios donde poner en juego el límite entre la ficción y el documento. Tomando como ejemplo su serie “Paisajes/Microfilm” (2019), encontramos que la obra de Rojas Mugica hace dialogar a las fotografías intervenidas con acotaciones, intercambios epistolares de correo electrónicos, soportes variados tales como marcos de diapositiva, fotogramas sin referente, película E-6, entre otros, dando por resultado un trabajo donde se reflejan la ausencia y la presencia, el origen y el exilio, la memoria y el olvido y donde la contundencia del mensaje político se presenta vinculando el material de archivo con las nuevas tecnologías para trazar un puente en el tiempo para reconstruir un pasado perdido.
Celeste Rojas Mugica approaches the consequences of certain historical events in South America, the symbolic-political imagery of the landscape and the social use of images. Her interest in technical image arises at an early age in a dark room built in her house where she learned to develop photographs. Her personal and family history merge with the recent political history of the Southern Cone – the fight against the Argentine and Chilean dictatorships, the various forced displacements that her parents suffered during the 1970s and 1980s – shaping the content and materiality of the images that build her work. These events somehow conditioned her photographic practice and the choice of the archive as a support for experimentation and a space for reflection, developing exercises where the limit between fiction and the document was brought into question. Taking as an example her series “Paisajes / Microfilm” (2019), we find that Rojas Mugica´s work makes the intervened photographs dialogue with annotations, electronic mail epistolary exchanges, several supports such as slide frames, frames without reference, film E-6, among others, resulting in a work that reflects absence and presence, origin and exile, memory and forgetfulness and where the forcefulness of the political message is presented by linking archive material with new technologies in order to create a bridge in time and rebuild a lost past

En su obra investiga sobre la relación entre memoria, violencia e imaginarios sobre el territorio. Trabaja con las imágenes y los archivos como medios y materia de experimentación en torno a sus usos sociales y su potencia política, situando su práctica en los bordes entre la ficción y el documento. Ha exhibido y publicado en Latinoamérica, Europa y Asia. A lo largo de su carrera ha recibido los Fondos Ibermedia; FONDART y Fondo Audiovisual (Chile); BECAR Cultura del Ministerio de Cultura de la Nación (Argentina); Fondo Nacional de las Artes (Argentina), el Deutsch Art Council Fund (Italia); entre otros. Su obra ha sido reconocida con los Premios Nacional de Fotografía (Chile, 2017); Premio Bienal Arte Joven de Buenos Aires (Argentina, 2017) y Premio a la Creación Latinoamericana de la Bienal de Imagen en Movimiento (Argentina, 2018), entre otros. Recientemente ha exhibido su obra en Ars Electronica (Austria), BIENALSUR (Argentina; Chile), Les Rencontres d’ Arles (Francia), la Bienal de Imagen en Movimiento (Argentina) y el Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián (España), entre otros.
